On the Big Island of Hawaii, about 15 miles outside of the city of Kailua-Kona, the Manago Hotel has been providing guests with superior and inexpensive lodging since 1917. While it does require renting a car, the ability to stay in the less-inhabited and less-touristy mountain village of Captain Cook is well-worth the added expense. Just below the hotel is the marine reserve 'Kealekekua Bay', a unique and wonderful destination for hiking and kayaking, a must see for any visitor.
While my first visit in 1989 included a stay in a modern room with a balcony (still only $59-$64/night depending on the view you would like), my most recent visit in 1994 explored the historic rooms with a shared bath (currently $33/night). The onsite restaurant provided traditional favorites at reasonable prices.
